Traditions {31 Days of Becoming an Intentional Parent}

Every year before the gifts are opened, we read the Christmas story from the Bible. It started when I was growing up and continues now. It’s a tradition.

We must have number candles on everyone’s birthday cakes. Everyone. Grown-ups included. It started when Emma was little, and she looks forward to it each time we celebrate a birthday. It’s something little, but it’s important to her. It’s a tradition.

Tradition can feel like such a lofty word. Like we need something grand that requires a ton of prep work. But really…. Traditions can be the little things we do together. They’re the things that help identify our family. They’re the things that make memories.

With Christmas just around the corner, my plan is to be intentional about some family traditions. Each year Emma makes a Christmas craft that she gives as gifts to our immediate and extended families. That’s in this year’s plans. We’ll bake and decorate cutout cookies again too. We’ll be reading The Sparkle Box and filling our own sparkle box with gifts for Jesus. We’ll have a Happy Birthday Jesus party. We’ll celebrate Jesus and our traditions as a family.

I’d like us to be more intentional about everyday traditions, not just around the holidays. Do you do anything special as a family? Things that are “yours”?
